| I use the Chord Theory to find which Chords go together. Let me give you an example of a song I wrote not long ago.
I was playing around with Emaj9th and started just picking it. I thought it sounded nice and figured I should make a little melody out of it and then solo over it later. Now, I know that it is obviously in the key of E Maj. Now I need to decide what kind of Emotion I want, and what Chords to use to tap into that Emotion. (Emotion is something that I talk about a lot in Music) E Maj9th isn't a very sad sounding Chord. If you just pluck across the Chord, it gives you a nice relaxing melodic sound. So now I need to decide how I want to further that. The most logical would be to use another Major next. So now we must look at the E Maj scale and it's intervals to decide what Chord should be used. So lets look real quick.
E-F#-G#-A-B-C#-D#-
Now, using our knowledge of Tones, we know that I IV and V are the most commonly used Maj Chords. So I decide that I want to go to A next.
Then I come back to Emaj9th. I pluck through it again. Now I know in my mind that I still want a nice relaxing sound to come next, but I want to change it up a bit. So I look through again and see the V interval is a B. So I pluck through B, back to A and then finish it with E Maj.
That is one verse. Now I get to the Chorus. Once again, I begin by thinking through what kind of sound I want to make. This time, I want a sadder tonality, but still relaxing. So I look for a Interval that is often used as a Minor. So naturally, I look for the Relative Minor, which in this case is C#. Now, this is the tricky part. Next I decide to use G#, but this Chord is an either or. So what do I do? Well, what I would do is play both and find which one fits the flow of the song better.
Just keep repeating that process until you have the sound you want. I hope this answers your questions. | |
